October 2026 note
September: flat prices, a narrowing gap, a big crop ahead
Extra virgin ended September at €3.39/kg, barely moved from mid-August (€3.33/kg). The lower grades firmed up instead: lampante went from €2.98/kg to €3.15/kg. Only 24 cents now separate extra virgin from lampante, against 75 cents a year earlier.
The first official harvest estimates came out at the end of the month: 1.6 million tonnes for Spain in 2026/27, up 23% on the previous campaign, with four kilos in five coming from Andalusia (Ministry of Agriculture, 1 October). A crop that size normally weighs on prices.
This year there is a counterweight. Spain’s olive oil marketing standard (Royal Decree 84/2021) allows oil to be withdrawn from the market until the following campaign when opening stocks plus estimated production exceed 120% of the six-campaign average — 1,844,000 tonnes for 2026/27. With stocks estimated at around 374,000 tonnes, the first estimates put the total above that line, and the farmers’ union COAG expects the mechanism to be triggered for the first time. The order is due by 31 October.
What it means if you are sourcing
- Prices are low — extra virgin at origin is around its lowest level in more than two years, and 20% below a year ago.
- New-crop oil arrives from mid-October — the first early-harvest lots usually sell at a premium; most of the crop is milled from December to February.
- Watch the withdrawal decision — whether it is activated, and how much oil it takes off the market, will set the tone for the winter.
- Bulk price is only one line of the bottle — selection, bottling, packaging, certification and logistics come on top — see how private label costs build up.
Three references, three numbers
Each reference samples different operations over a different week, so gaps of 10 to 15 cents are normal. We track Poolred because it records actual bulk transactions, every week, for the whole of Spain.

Frequently asked questions
What is the price of extra virgin olive oil at origin in Spain today?
€3.39/kg in the week of 19–25 September 2026 (Poolred, Spain), 20% below a year earlier (€4.23/kg). Virgin olive oil stood at €3.26/kg and lampante at €3.15/kg.
What is Poolred?
Poolred is the origin price information system run by the Fundación del Olivar in Jaén. It records actual bulk olive oil transactions between Spanish mills and buyers and publishes a weekly average price per category, for Spain and by province.
Why is the origin price so different from the price on the shelf?
The origin price is bulk oil at the mill. A bottle on the shelf also carries selection and blending, bottling, packaging, certification, transport, duties where they apply, and the margins of the brand and the retailer.
Will olive oil prices go up again?
Nobody can say for sure. A 1.6-million-tonne harvest points to continued pressure; the possible withdrawal of oil under Spain’s marketing standard would work the other way. We update this page every month with what actually happened.
